As we wrap up the year, it is undeniable that DeFi has garnered significant attention in the media. Sometimes it can be useful to look backward before going forward. This year had very notable highs and some infamous lows — with some figures rising to fame only to fall from grace just as quickly. To call the last year a rollercoaster would be an understatement.

Our Top Stories of the Year
Endgame with Vitalik Buterin
Bankless’ Podcast interviews lots of interesting people within DeFi. Check out this great interview with none other than Vitalik Buterin, Founder of Ethereum. He talks about the merge and gives his take on the industry as a whole.
Crypto Adoption in Brazil
The Brazil Chamber of Deputies passes a law for utilizing cryptocurrencies for payments. Brazil is the most recent in a long line of Latin American countries that are adopting crypto usage. Other notable LatAm countries following suit include Panama, Paraguay, Honduras, Guatemala, and Argentina. 2022 reinforced that Latin America will play a major role in the future of DeFi.
Ethereum Merge Recap
2022 was perhaps most importantly the year Ethereum moved from PoW to PoS. Most notably, migrating to Proof of Stake has decreased energy usage on the network by around 99%! The merge should help make the network cheaper and faster, as usage continues to increase.
2022 AKA CeFi Rekt
The biggest takeaway this year was probably the hubris and decline within CeFi. Some of the most popular, and mainstream CeFi projects appear to have dissolved in 2022. A combination of bad actors, over-centralization, and lack of clarity set up CeFi for failure. Remember what drew you and us alike to DeFi in the first place.
Cointelegraph gives a breakdown of their 10 favorite tweets that aged badly this year. Remember when Terra, Celsius, and FTX were the shiny new toys on the block? Remember when your neighbor heard about Crypto at a Football game? We know you know better, because we know better, and you know us! I mean even Fortune Magazine mistook SBF for “the next Warren Buffet.”
